Quark, the Ferengi bartender on Deep Space Nine, has always been a capitalist and wheeler-dealer. After being diagnosed with an incurable fatal illness, Quark sells his body to a dying Ferengi named Brunt in exchange for a sizeable sum of money which he believes will help support his brother Rom and nephew Nog after he is gone.
However, Quark is soon informed that Doctor Bashir has found a cure for his illness, but it's too late to revoke the contract. Quark is forced to consider the ramifications of his decision to sell his body, especially when Brunt seeks to collect on his purchase before Quark is actually dead.
As the deadline for Quark's "retirement" approaches, he begins to understand the true nature of his life's work and re-evaluates his relationship to his friends, family, and the community of Deep Space Nine. He ultimately decides that his real legacy is the bonds he has forged with the people he cares about, not his financial schemes.
Meanwhile, Odo is dealing with his own health crisis, as his shape-shifting abilities begin to deteriorate due to his overuse of them during his imprisonment. As he contemplates the possibility of losing his unique identity, he and Chief O'Brien work on a solution that will allow him to remain himself while living in a solid form.
As the two storylines converge, the crew of Deep Space Nine faces their fears of mortality and the changing dynamics of their own lives. Body Parts serves as a thoughtful exploration of the value of life and the meaning of identity, with a healthy dose of Ferengi humor and ethical dilemmas.
