Miles O'Brien, chief of operations on Deep Space Nine, is convicted of espionage by the Argrathi, a race that he and Commander Sisko have been trying to establish diplomatic relations with. When Miles returns to the station he is deeply troubled and yet almost relieved to be back on DS9. However, he soon realizes that he is having a difficult time adjusting to life back on the station. He begins to experience vivid flashbacks of his time in prison on Argratha, as his physical and emotional scars begin to surface. With each passing day, it becomes increasingly clear that something is wrong with Miles.

The crew of DS9 grows increasingly concerned as Miles starts to experience a number of disturbing and violent outbursts. He becomes paranoid and increasingly withdrawn, refusing to eat, sleep, or even talk to his friends. Meanwhile, Commander Sisko and Doctor Bashir try to find a way to help Miles cope with his trauma, but they quickly realize that Miles' suffering may be too deep to be healed easily.

As Miles continues to spiral out of control, the crew of DS9 becomes increasingly frustrated with their inability to help him. Deeply conflicted, Miles seems unable to shake the horrors of his time in prison, even though he was only there for around 20 years (the Argrathi pulled a clever trick with a memory implant to make it feel longer). Even after being cleared of all charges and given a clean bill of health by the station's medical staff, Miles remains haunted by his experiences, and it seems clear that he will never be the same again.

As everyone begins to lose hope, an unlikely ally steps forward to offer his help. Garak, the enigmatic Cardassian tailor, is one of the few people on the station who seems to truly understand Miles' predicament. Over the course of the episode, Garak becomes something of a mentor to Miles, offering him a way to make sense of his trauma and to find a measure of peace within himself.

Despite the gravity of the episode's subject matter, Hard Time still manages to deliver some of the signature charm and wit that Deep Space Nine was known for. Even as Miles' psyche begins to crumble, the rest of the crew continue with their daily routines, with Quark attempting to cheer up the somber O'Brien by taking him on a tour of the station's holosuite facilities. But these lighthearted moments only serve to underscore the gravity of Miles' situation, as he struggles to come to terms with the horrors he has experienced.

As the episode draws to a close, Miles begins to make some tentative steps towards recovery, thanks in no small part to Garak's guidance. But the damage that has been done cannot be undone, and it becomes clear that Miles will never fully recover from his experiences on Argratha. Despite this, the crew of Deep Space Nine remains there to support Miles as he tries to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. Hard Time is a powerful and deeply affecting episode that explores the lengths to which the human spirit can endure, even in the face of overwhelming trauma and loss.
