In the second part of the two-part "Past Tense" storyline in season 3 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Sisko, Bashir, and Dax must continue to navigate their way through the early 21st century in an attempt to prevent a major historical event from occurring. The trio is divided, with Sisko and Bashir posing as homeless men in a slum, while Dax is taken in by an influential businessman who is involved in the events they are trying to prevent.
As Sisko and Bashir try to blend in with their surroundings and find their way back to their own time, they are confronted with the harsh reality of poverty and social inequality. They join forces with a group of locals who are organizing a protest against the government's treatment of the homeless population, including the creation of "Sanctuary Districts" where they are essentially imprisoned.
Meanwhile, Dax finds herself embroiled in the inner workings of the businessman's world, including his involvement in a scheme to manipulate the future for his own gain. She must balance her desire to prevent the disastrous event with the knowledge that any changes they make could have unintended consequences on the future.
As the deadline for the historical event draws near, Sisko, Bashir, and Dax must use their knowledge of the future to try and influence the present without being discovered. Their actions have far-reaching consequences, both for themselves and for the people they encounter in the past.
"Past Tense, Part II" is a thought-provoking episode that tackles issues of poverty, social justice, and the butterfly effect of time travel. It showcases the strengths of the show's ensemble cast, particularly Avery Brooks as Sisko, and highlights the dangers of taking knowledge of the future for granted.
