Ep 23. Graveyard Shift
- September 6, 2002
SpongeBob SquarePants season 3 episode 23, "Graveyard Shift," is a spooky installment of the beloved animated series that sees SpongeBob and Squidward working the night shift at the Krusty Krab. The episode begins with SpongeBob and Squidward counting up the day's earnings when Mr. Krabs announces that they will be keeping the Krusty Krab open 24 hours a day to increase profits. SpongeBob is thrilled at the prospect of working the night shift, but Squidward is less than enthusiastic.
As the sun begins to set, strange things start happening around the Krusty Krab. The phone rings, but there is no one on the other end. A mysterious customer comes in and orders only a drink, which he then proceeds to pour all over the floor. And then there are the strange noises coming from the freezer. SpongeBob tries to brush off the weird occurrences and focus on his work, but Squidward is getting increasingly agitated.
Finally, SpongeBob asks Squidward what's wrong and he reveals that the Krusty Krab is built on the site of the old Bikini Bottom graveyard. Legend has it that the ghosts of the dead still haunt the grounds, particularly at night. SpongeBob is skeptical, but Squidward manages to spook him with a few well-placed sound effects. From that point on, both SpongeBob and Squidward are on edge, jumping at every strange noise and shadow.
As the night wears on, things only get worse. The phone keeps ringing with no one on the other end, and a strange green glow emanates from the freezer. SpongeBob and Squidward decide to investigate, but what they find is even more terrifying than they could have imagined. The source of the noise is the Hash-Slinging Slasher, a ghostly fry cook who was killed in a freak accident at the Krusty Krab years before. According to legend, he appears every year on the night of the grave shift to wreak havoc on his former workplace.
SpongeBob and Squidward try to run, but the Hash-Slinging Slasher pursues them relentlessly. They hide in the freezer, but the ghoul soon finds them. Just when things look their bleakest, a twist ending reveals that the Hash-Slinging Slasher is not who he seems, and SpongeBob saves the day by outsmarting the ghostly cook.
