"Missing Identity" begins with SpongeBob waking up after having a dream that he was a delivery boy. He hears a knock on his door and peeks outside to see that his mailbox has been destroyed. He then realizes that he cannot remember anything about himself, including his name, job, or even his home address. SpongeBob freaks out and journeys to the Krusty Krab to ask Mr. Krabs for help. However, Mr. Krabs doesn't recognize him and calls him a stranger.
Panicking, SpongeBob goes to his best friend Patrick, who is equally perplexed. They embark on a quest to discover SpongeBob's real identity by revisiting all the places they've been together. They visit Mrs. Puff's Boating School, where SpongeBob usually goes to work. However, he cannot remember anything about his job as a boating instructor. They then go to SpongeBob's house, but SpongeBob cannot remember anything about his beloved pet snail, Gary.
SpongeBob and Patrick then visit Sandy, who suggests that they try hypnosis to recover SpongeBob's memories. She uses a hypnotic pendulum to lead SpongeBob into a trance, but instead of helping him remember, he falls asleep. Sandy then trims SpongeBob's hair and beard, hoping to jog his memory. SpongeBob wakes up even more confused and frustrated, with no memory of anything.
At a loss, SpongeBob goes to the police station to report that he's missing. However, the police officer who takes his report also calls him "stranger" and treats SpongeBob like a criminal. SpongeBob runs back home, distraught and disappointed. However, as he sits on his couch, he realizes that the TV show he's watching, "Identity Lost," sounds eerily familiar. Suddenly, he remembers his name and everything else about himself.
In the second half of the episode, "Plankton's Army," Plankton is seen outside the Krusty Krab, attempting to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Planktonamor agrees to help, and they assemble an unusual army consisting of Plankton's cousins Clem and Rufus, and his wife, Karen the computer. Plankton's army has different specialties; Clem is an expert at karate, whereas Rufus has a unique ability to contort his body into any shape to escape tight spaces. Karen is the strategist and Plankton's biggest supporter.
The next day, Plankton and his army infiltrate the Krusty Krab. They encounter obstacles along the way, including a hula hoop challenge and SpongeBob's attempt to stop them. However, Plankton's army manages to overcome every hurdle, and they finally make it to the vault with the secret Krabby Patty formula.
