In the 36th episode of the second season of SpongeBob SquarePants, titled "I'm with Stupid," SpongeBob pretends to be dumb in order to make Patrick's parents happy during their visit to Bikini Bottom.

When Patrick's parents arrive, they are disappointed to find out that their son's best friend is a sponge, assuming he must be stupid. In order to make them feel better, SpongeBob agrees to act dumb and pretend that he is Patrick's roommate. Throughout the episode, SpongeBob goes to great lengths to convince Patrick's parents that he is an idiot, accidentally causing chaos in the process.

Meanwhile, Patrick is embarrassed by his family's visit and tries to distance himself from them, but eventually realizes the value of family and comes to terms with his own "stupidity."
