In Save Epsilon 6! the second episode of the series, newly appointed Space Force General Mark Naird played by Steve Carell and his team face a new challenge. They need to figure out a way to save a group of American scientists who are stationed on a satellite that's about to go down in flames.
The episode starts as General Mark Naird and Dr. Adrian Mallory, played by John Malkovich, are having a conversation about the importance of the Space Force's mission. General Naird believes that if the Space Force can successfully retrieve resources, set up colonies, and ultimately protect the planet from attack from other countries, then it would have been worth it.
Soon, they receive alarming news that Epsilon 6, a U.S.-owned satellite that has been housing a scientific experiment for the past few years, is plummeting to Earth, and they are required to find a way to save it so they can continue to study gamma radiation. However, the team quickly realizes there is bad news when they are told any human intervention would result in certain death.
Mark Naird and his team immediately get to work to develop a plan to save the scientists. They brainstorm various ideas such as rockets, parachutes, and airbags but none of these experimental technologies have been tested before, all options seem unlikely to succeed. As they continue to work through solutions, the episode also takes some time to explore the personalities of the team members and their dynamics as a group.
As the time to start carrying out the plan approaches, Mark Naird is faced with a difficult decision. Should they risk putting an astronaut's life in danger to save the lives of the scientists? The answer is clear but putting those words into action provides the episode with plenty of tension and drama.
Throughout the episode, we see the senior management at the White House following the developments closely. We also meet Mark Naird's disgruntled daughter, Erin (played by Diana Silvers), who is struggling to adapt to her new life away from her friends and school.
Overall, Save Epsilon 6! does a great job of setting the stage and exploring some of the characters' personas. The episode makes sure to highlight the group's core qualities that may gradually lead them to success, showcasing a perfect harmony between the serious and comic aspects of the story. The episode ends on a cliffhanger which leaves viewers wanting more and sets up more potential drama for the upcoming episodes.
