In the thirteenth episode of the first season of Space 1999, entitled "Matter of Life and Death," the Alphans come across a seemingly deserted planet that they soon realize is home to two warring factions of beings. One group of beings is composed of pure energy, while the other is made up of physical beings. The crew becomes involved when one of the physical beings, Maya's father Mentor, seeks refuge from the energy beings on Alpha.
As the crew struggles to navigate the intricate politics and tensions between the two factions, they begin to realize that the energy beings are not as indestructible as they seem and may be vulnerable to destruction. Along the way, we see the personal struggles of several of the crew members, as Maya struggles to reconcile her love for her father with the fact that he has potentially doomed the energy beings to destruction.
Throughout the episode, tensions run high and the stakes are higher, as the crew of Alpha must navigate complex moral issues and make difficult decisions with far-reaching consequences. Ultimately, the episode is as much a meditation on the nature of life and death as it is a thrilling science fiction adventure, proving once again why Space 1999 has remained such a beloved classic of the genre.
