In Southland season 4 episode 4, titled "I.D.", we see the officers of the LAPD struggling to keep up with the never-ending work of the streets. The episode begins with Cooper and Tang responding to a call about a possible suicidal woman in a hotel room. The woman turns out to be a prostitute, and Cooper shows his softer side by encouraging her to get clean and turn her life around.
Meanwhile, Sherman and Bryant respond to a call about a stolen car and end up chasing the suspect on foot, only to discover that the real culprit is someone unexpected. This leads them on a hunt for the true thief, who they eventually catch thanks to some quick thinking on Sherman's part.
Elsewhere, Adams and Clarke come across a man in cardiac arrest and must work quickly to save his life. After successfully reviving him, they discover that the man has a history of drug abuse and was likely using at the time of his heart attack.
The episode also focuses on the personal lives of the officers, as we see Cooper struggling to come to terms with his sexuality and Tang dealing with the fallout from her recent breakup. Additionally, we see Sherman and Bryant struggling to stay focused amidst mounting distractions in their personal lives.
As the episode comes to a close, we see the officers continuing to navigate the challenges of their job and their personal lives, with no end in sight for the demanding work of being a police officer in Southland.
