In South Park season 13 episode 7, titled "Fatbeard," viewers follow the adventure of Eric Cartman, who holds a strong fascination for pirates as well as cash. To fulfill his dream of becoming a pirate, Cartman creates his own persona, a bearded pirate by the name of "Captain Fatbeard." He even goes as far as dressing up in pirate costume, and recruits the boys to join his crew.
The pirate crew, with Cartman as its leader, sets sail on the high seas, hoping to capture treasure and live the life of a traditional pirate. However, things quickly take a turn when the crew meets a group of modern-day pirates who are not impressed with Cartman's romanticized version of piracy.
The modern-day pirates are more interested in video games and technology than traditional piracy. Despite Captain Fatbeard's attempt to prove he is a real pirate, the modern-day pirates ultimately bring the crew onboard their own ship, where Cartman and the boys discover the modern pirates are from Somalia.
As they sail through the ocean, the pirates get involved in a series of hilarious events that capture the essence of South Park humor. Cartman tries to give the Somalian pirates a taste of old-style piracy, but they instead introduce him to the reality of modern-day piracy, which involves using the internet to run scams and frauds.
Cartman, however, is not pleased with the modern-day piracy that he discovers, and decides to go to war with the Somalians to prove himself as a true pirate. Meanwhile, the other boys become bored with the pirate life and start to miss their video games and gadgets.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to the usual South Park humor, including pop culture references, crude jokes, and social commentary. The show is notoriously unapologetic, and no topic is off limits.
In "Fatbeard," South Park manages to navigate the topic of piracy, simultaneously paying homage to classic pirate tales while highlighting the dangers and moral ambiguity of modern-day piracy. The message of the episode is ultimately that the romanticized images of piracy are far from reality, and that real pirates are often far less glamorous and more criminalized than the media portrays.
Overall, "Fatbeard" is another classic South Park episode that will have viewers laughing out loud one minute, and stirring up debate and discussion the next. With its clever writing, lovable characters, and trademark humor, it's no wonder South Park has been so beloved since its debut in 1997.
