In South Park season 10 episode 7, titled Tsst, parents are at their wit's end trying to cope with their disobedient children. They turn to the ultimate authority on child behavior, Nanny Stella, for help. However, even Nanny Stella is no match for Eric Cartman's unruly behavior.
Desperate for a solution, the boys' parents turn to a mysterious woman named Miss Havisham who claims she can train children using an ancient method called "tsst." Though initially skeptical, the parents are desperate and agree to try Miss Havisham's methods.
Miss Havisham hires a sadistic dog trainer named Cesar Millan who specializes in training aggressive dogs. His methods, which involve physical punishment, startle even Miss Havisham, but she insists that this is the only way to train a child like Cartman.
Over the course of the episode, Cartman is subjected to increasingly harsh methods of discipline in an effort to break his will and make him more obedient. He is forced to eat hot sauce, locked in a room for hours, and even threatened with physical harm if he misbehaves. His parents are horrified but continue to follow Miss Havisham's advice, convinced that it will eventually lead to a happier home.
Eventually, however, even Cartman's stubbornness begins to wear down. He becomes more respectful towards authority figures and even shows genuine remorse for his misdeeds. Though he is still the same old Cartman at heart, his behavior has definitely improved.
Meanwhile, Nanny Stella begins to suspect that something is amiss in South Park. She tries to investigate but is constantly stonewalled by Miss Havisham, who is fiercely protective of her methods. Eventually, Nanny Stella discovers the truth behind "tsst" and confronts Miss Havisham, leading to a dramatic showdown.
Tsst is a darkly comic episode that showcases the series' trademark irreverent humor while also delving into some surprisingly heavy subject matter. The relationship between parents and children is a theme that runs throughout the episode, with the adults desperate to do whatever it takes to get their kids to behave and the children testing the limits of their authority.
At the same time, the episode also raises serious questions about the use of physical punishment as a means of discipline. The scenes in which Cartman is subjected to increasingly harsh methods of "training" are difficult to watch and raise uncomfortable questions about how far is too far when it comes to disciplining a child.
In the end, Tsst is a thought-provoking episode that will leave viewers thinking long after the credits roll. Though it's certainly not the show's most lighthearted installment, it's a perfect example of what South Park does best: finding the humor and humanity in even the darkest of subjects.
