Ep 1. Enrolling at DWMA!

Enrolling at DWMA! is the first episode of Soul Eater Not! season 1, which introduces us to a new group of characters while also giving a nod to the previous series, Soul Eater.

We start off by meeting Tsugumi Harudori, a high school student who has just discovered that she is a weapon. She is a halberd, a type of weapon that has a long pole and an ax-like blade at the end. Tsugumi is unsure of how to control her weapon powers, but she is determined to learn how to use them properly.

She decides to enroll at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, or DWMA, in order to receive training. The academy serves as a school for both weapons and meisters, who are people who can use weapons in combat. Tsugumi arrives at the academy and is immediately greeted by Meme Tatane, a fellow student who becomes Tsugumi’s friend and roommate.

Meme is a bit flighty and scatterbrained, but she is also very kind and friendly. She helps Tsugumi settle into her new room and shows her around the academy. Tsugumi is amazed by the size and complexity of the academy, which includes classrooms, dormitories, and even a cafeteria.

As Tsugumi and Meme explore the academy, they encounter some of the other students. One of the students they meet is Anya Hepburn, a wealthy girl who is also a weapon. Anya is a bit standoffish towards Tsugumi and Meme, but she is also intrigued by Tsugumi’s halberd form. Anya is a powerful weapon, and she is used to being the best at everything, so she is not used to having competition.

Tsugumi and Meme also meet two meisters, Akane and Clay. Akane is very handsome and charming, and he seems to take an instant liking to Tsugumi. Clay, on the other hand, is very serious and has a no-nonsense attitude. He is a bit skeptical of Tsugumi’s ability to control her weapon powers, but he is willing to give her a chance.

Throughout the episode, we also see glimpses of some of the characters from the original Soul Eater series. We see Maka and Soul, as well as Black Star and Tsubaki. These characters are all attending the academy as well, and we see them in passing as they go about their business.

The episode ends with Tsugumi attending her first class at the academy. The teacher is a strict, no-nonsense woman named Shaula Gorgon. She is the instructor for the “NOT” class, which stands for “Normally Overcome Target.” This class is for students who are not as skilled as the other students at the academy, and its purpose is to help them improve their skills.

Tsugumi is a bit nervous about the class, but she is determined to do her best. She is paired up with Anya for the class, and the two of them are tasked with practicing their synchronization. This involves learning how to coordinate their movements in order to become a more effective weapon/meister team.

Throughout the practice session, we see glimpses of Tsugumi’s past. She used to be a normal girl, but she had a traumatic experience involving a stalker. This experience awakened her weapon powers, and she has been struggling to control them ever since. We also see that her parents are supportive of her decision to attend the academy and learn how to control her powers.

Enrolling at DWMA! is a great introduction to the Soul Eater Not! series. It introduces us to a new group of characters while also giving us a glimpse of the original series. There is plenty of action and humor throughout the episode, and the animation is beautiful and detailed. If you enjoyed the original Soul Eater series, you will definitely want to check out Soul Eater Not!
