Snuff Box is a British television black comedy series produced by BBC Three which first premiered in 2006. The show is written and starred in by Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher, with Richard Ayoade and Alan Ford making recurring appearances. The title of the show is a nod to the old urban legend of snuff movies, notwithstanding, while the show is graphic at times, it is not generally considered âsnuffâ by any means. Snuff Box follows the misadventures of two best friends, both of whom are professional assassins who work for a secret organization officially known as âThe Businessâ. As assassins, they spend much of their time waiting for their next targets, and so they pass their free time by hanging out at their favorite bar, where they frequently discuss everything from their work to their lives.
The lead character of the show is Matt Berry, who plays the role of âMattâ, the supposedly more serious and hardened of the duo, who is locked into the assassin lifestyle. Rich Fulcher, on the other hand, plays the role of âRichâ, who seems to look on life as a never-ending series of jokes and pratfalls, and remains constantly ready to cut loose and do something ridiculous at a moment's notice.
The show has a quirky and surreal sense of humor, which is both dark and absurd at times. It takes on a wide range of subjects, such as sex, death, and failed relationships, but does so with glee and irreverence. The characters are often seen getting into all manner of ridiculous scenarios, some of which are so strange that they're downright surreal.
One of the recurring themes in the show is its unconventional structure. Some episodes are presented as a series of sketches, while others are presented as a sitcom or a drama. The show also makes frequent use of flashbacks and other narrative tricks, which can make it difficult to follow at times, but also serve to make it more engaging.
Another important aspect of Snuff Box is its musical score. Matt Berry is well known for his love of music, and he composed much of the score for the show himself. The score includes a mixture of original pieces and covers of classic songs from a wide variety of genres, including rock, jazz, and even classical music.
The supporting cast of the show is also excellent. Richard Ayoade, who is best known for his role in the series The IT Crowd, makes frequent appearances in the show, often as a character who is even more bizarre than the main characters. Alan Ford, who has appeared in dozens of films and television shows over the years, also makes an impression in his role as the leader of The Business.
While the show is definitely not for everyone, it has amassed a small but dedicated cult following over the years. Those who enjoy the show often praise its originality, its surreal sense of humor, and its unique structure. They also appreciate the chemistry between Berry and Fulcher, which makes the characters' friendship feel believable and engaging.
Overall, Snuff Box is a dark and absurd comedy that manages to be both hilarious and unsettling at the same time. Its quirky humor, unique structure, and excellent cast make it a standout show that is unlike anything else on television.
