Set in the midst of the crack epidemic of the 1980s in Los Angeles, "Snowfall" explores the impact of drugs on the city through the eyes of several characters, including Franklin Saint, a young street entrepreneur; Gustavo "El Oso" Zapata, a Mexican wrestler caught up in a power struggle within a crime family; CIA operative Teddy McDonald, who begins to question his own morality as he becomes more involved in the drug trade; and Lucia Villanueva, the daughter of a prominent Mexican crime boss who is forced to take over the family business. In "Snowfall" season 1 episode 2, titled "Make Them Birds Fly," the stakes become higher for all of the characters as they confront the brutal reality of the drug trade and the consequences of their actions.
The episode opens with Franklin and his friend Leon attempting to sell their newly acquired cocaine to local drug dealer Lenny. However, Lenny is unimpressed with the quality of the product and threatens violence if Franklin and Leon do not come up with something better. Determined to make a name for himself in the drug game, Franklin enlists the help of his father's former partner, Avi, to smuggle in higher quality cocaine from South America.
Meanwhile, Gustavo finds himself caught in the middle of a power struggle between his boss, Pedro, and a rival gang. In an attempt to prove his loyalty to Pedro, Gustavo agrees to help him transport a shipment of drugs across the border. However, their plans are interrupted when they encounter a group of armed robbers, leading to a fierce gun battle and forcing Gustavo to make a difficult decision.
As Teddy becomes more deeply involved in the drug trade, he grapples with the morality of his actions and the effect they have on both his personal life and his relationship with his CIA colleagues. At the same time, Lucia faces pressure from her father to take control of the family business and expand their operations beyond their current territory.
With tensions running high and the consequences of their actions becoming increasingly dire, the characters in "Snowfall" season 1 episode 2 are forced to confront the brutal reality of the drug trade and the choices they must make in order to survive. From the streets of Los Angeles to the border between Mexico and the United States, the episode paints a vivid portrait of a world where violence and greed reign supreme, and where even the smallest misstep can have deadly consequences.
