Jennifer Hyatte was living in prison with her husband, George Hyatte, who was jailed for robbery. George and Jennifer met when she was working as a prison nurse and they quickly fell in love. Jennifer became obsessed with her husband and would write him love letters every day. After a couple of years of serving his sentence, George was transferred to a work-release program, which allowed him to leave the prison during the day and return in the evening to sleep.
On August 9, 2005, Jennifer drove to the prison to pick up her husband as usual. However, this time she was armed. As soon as George got into the car, Jennifer handed him a gun and told him to shoot the prison guard who was escorting him to the car. George complied, and he and Jennifer drove away from the prison. The police immediately launched a manhunt to capture the couple.
The Hyattes were on the run for a few days, during which time they robbed a bank and fled to Georgia. The police caught up with them in a motel room, and the couple engaged in a shootout. George was killed, and Jennifer was wounded and taken into custody.
Jennifer's trial was highly publicized, and there was much debate over whether she was a victim of domestic abuse or a cold-blooded killer. Jennifer’s defense argued that she was coerced by her husband to commit the murder, while the prosecution maintained that she was a willing participant who had planned the entire escape. The jury ultimately found Jennifer guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced her to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
