Samantha Wohlford is the subject of season 29 episode 4 of the true crime series Snapped. The episode tells the story of a seemingly normal suburban mother who is accused and ultimately found guilty of plotting the murder of her ex-husband.
At the outset of the episode, viewers are introduced to Samantha and her ex-husband, Jack, through family photographs and home videos. The couple met and fell in love in their early twenties, marrying soon after and raising two children together. However, their relationship took a turn for the worse when Jack was caught cheating on Samantha, leading to their divorce.
Despite the difficult end to their marriage, Samantha and Jack managed to remain on decent terms for the sake of their children. Jack eventually moved on and began dating his coworker, a woman named Lynn. It was shortly after Lynn moved in with Jack that Samantha's behavior began to raise eyebrows.
Fellow parents at Samantha's children's school noticed that she was stalking Jack and Lynn, even going so far as to follow them in her car. Her behavior escalated when she showed up to Jack's house unannounced, claiming that she wanted to pick up some of her belongings. Instead of simply taking what she came for, Samantha allegedly snuck into Jack's bedroom and began stealing personal items.
It was around this time that Samantha's friends and family began to notice a marked shift in her personality. She seemed more erratic and unstable, even going as far as to claim that Jack and Lynn were plotting against her and her children. Her closest friend, Holly, even claimed that Samantha confided in her that she was considering hiring a hitman to "take care of" Jack and Lynn.
The turning point in the episode comes when Samantha meets a man named Blake at a local pool hall. Blake, who is soon revealed to be an undercover detective, befriends Samantha and begins recording their conversations. It's during one of these conversations that Samantha admits to planning the murder of Jack and Lynn, saying that she wants them both "out of the picture" so that she can have sole custody of her children.
Samantha is arrested and brought to trial, where the prosecution presents a convincing case against her. They argue that Samantha's erratic behavior and obsession with Jack and Lynn led her to hatch a plot to have them killed. While Samantha maintains her innocence and claims that she was merely venting to her friend Blake, the evidence against her is too strong to ignore.
The episode concludes with Samantha being found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Friends and family of both Samantha and Jack express shock and disbelief at the turn of events, with some even refusing to believe that Samantha was capable of such a heinous crime.
Throughout the episode, viewers are left to grapple with the disturbing reality that anyone, even a seemingly normal suburban mother, could be capable of plotting a murder. The episode serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and the lengths that people will go to in order to protect what they believe is rightfully theirs.
