Her aspirations led her to Florida, where she started working as a cocktail waitress at a bar on Clearwater Beach. On May 28, 2019, an off-duty deputy sheriff was driving down State Road 590 in Clearwater when he saw a woman wandering from car to car in the middle of the intersection. The woman was Brandy Stutzman, and she was frantically trying to get help for her boyfriend, Jeffrey Phillips, who was lying in the back seat of her car with a gunshot wound to the head. Brandy had just driven him to a nearby urgent care center, but they refused to treat him and told her to call 911 instead.

When the police arrived on the scene, Brandy told them a shocking story. She said that she and Jeffrey had gone to a nearby park to have sex, and while they were there, two men came out of the woods and attacked them. Brandy said that the men shot Jeffrey in the head and then took off. She described the attackers as two Hispanic men, but the police had a hard time believing her story.
