On December 17, 2000, Michelle lures Marty to their garage. John is hidden and waiting inside. When Marty enters the garage, John ambushed him and shot him five times, killing him instantly. They staged the crime scene and fled in their new car. Their original plan was to go to Mexico, but along the way, they were spotted and eventually caught by the Tennessee police department.

The investigation took over two years to complete, but eventually, the couple was brought to trial, found guilty, and sentenced. In 2004, Michelle was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, while John was sentenced to death row.
