Kelly Gissendaner and Greg Owen were an unlikely duo. In this episode of Snapped: Killer Couples, Season 13, episode 4, viewers are taken on a journey of deception, manipulation, and murder that will have them questioning just how far people will go for love and money.
Kelly was a single mother of three who struggled to make ends meet. She worked as a stripper to provide for her children and was known to be a fun-loving and outgoing person. Greg, on the other hand, came from a wealthy family and had a promising career as a businessman. When the two met, they quickly fell in love despite their differences.
As their relationship progressed, Greg became more and more obsessed with Kelly. He showered her with gifts and provided her with financial support, but his possessive nature soon started to shine through. Kelly, who had never experienced such attention before, was swept up in the romance and ignored the red flags.
However, when Greg's business ventures failed and he started to accumulate a significant amount of debt, he turned to Kelly to help him out. She was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed to take part in a scheme to defraud insurance companies out of money. The plan backfired, and the couple found themselves in even more debt.
Desperate for a way out, Greg came up with a new plan. He convinced Kelly to help him murder her husband, Doug Gissendaner, and collect the life insurance payout. Kelly was hesitant but eventually gave in to Greg's persuasion.
On the night of February 7, 1997, Doug was lured to a remote location by Kelly and Greg. There, Greg attacked him with a knife and left him for dead. However, Doug managed to survive the attack and identified Kelly and Greg as his attackers.
The police began to investigate, and Kelly initially denied any involvement. But when faced with the evidence, she confessed to her role in the murder and implicated Greg as the mastermind behind the scheme. Both were arrested and charged with the murder of Doug Gissendaner.
The trial was a media circus, with Kelly playing the part of the remorseful co-conspirator and Greg portraying himself as the innocent victim of Kelly's manipulation. Ultimately, the jury found both guilty, and they were sentenced to death.
Snapped: Killer Couples season 13 episode 4 provides a detailed account of the events leading up to the murder and the aftermath of the trial. It explores the psychology behind Kelly and Greg's actions and asks the question of whether love can really drive people to such extremes.
