The Parents is the ninth episode of the second season of Smash, a musical drama television series that follows the behind-the-scenes action of a fictional Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe called Bombshell.
In this episode, tensions rise between the parents and significant others of the show's main characters as they attend a dinner party hosted by Eileen (played by Anjelica Huston). Eileen's daughter, Katie, arrives unexpectedly and stirs up old wounds between her and her mother.
Meanwhile, Tom (played by Christian Borle) and Julia (played by Debra Messing) try to recalibrate their partnership, but their creative differences continue to cause friction between them. Ivy (played by Megan Hilty) struggles with the pressure of playing Marilyn and the setbacks she has faced in her personal life. Karen (played by Katharine McPhee) tries to navigate her career while worrying about her boyfriend, Jimmy (played by Jeremy Jordan), who is dealing with his past addiction.
The episode also features several musical performances, including Ivy's rendition of "Don't Forget Me" and Karen's performance of a new song called "That's Life," written by Jimmy.
As the show approaches its opening night, emotions run high and tensions continue to escalate, leaving the fate of Bombshell uncertain. The Parents sets the stage for a thrilling finale to the second season of Smash.
