Clark Kent confronts the possibility of a future without him when he discovers a notorious assassin is in town. He works tirelessly to prevent the worst from happening while trying to convince his girlfriend, Lana Lang, to keep fighting the good fight. Meanwhile, his best friend, Chloe Sullivan, struggles with the burden of keeping secrets from everyone she knows.
As the episode opens, Clark sits atop a tall building overlooking the city of Metropolis, listening to the sounds of the city below. Suddenly, he hears something- a noise that sets his super-hearing into overdrive. He looks down and sees a man running from an unseen enemy. Clark leaps into action, using his speed to catch up with the man and protect him from harm.
When he wakes up, the man introduces himself as Mick, a notorious assassin with a deadly reputation. Mick is on the run from his former employer, who wants him dead for daring to leave the organization. Clark immediately recognizes the danger Mick represents and vows to protect him at all costs.
As Clark investigates the threat to Mick's life, he discovers that his closest friends and family are also in danger. Meanwhile, Mick struggles to come to terms with his past, the crimes he has committed, and the fact that he must face them or die trying.
Chloe, who has been keeping secrets from everyone she knows, finally comes clean to Clark and Lana about her work as a meteor freak "watcher". As they begin to piece together Chloe's discoveries, they realize that they are dealing with something much bigger than they ever imagined.
With his friends and family in peril, Clark must use all of his abilities to stop the elusive assassin and his dangerous associates before they can cause any more harm. But as he fights to save the people he loves, Clark realizes that he cannot control every outcome, and must learn to let go of the things that are beyond his control. In the end, he is forced to confront his own mortality and the possibility of a future without him.
