Hanamichi Sakuragi is a tall, violent and delinquent student who has no interest in basketball. However, his life takes a drastic turn when he meets Haruko Akagi, who convinces him to join the Shohoku High School basketball team. In episode 4 of Slam Dunk season 1, titled "Basket Man Hanamichi Joins The Team," Hanamichi officially starts his basketball journey.
Despite his initial reluctance, Hanamichi is determined to prove himself on the court. He impresses his new teammates with his natural athleticism and leaping ability, which earns him the nickname "Basketman." However, his lack of experience and poor teamwork skills quickly become evident during practice. His teammates are frustrated with his selfishness and ball hogging.
In an attempt to help Hanamichi become a better team player, captain Takenori Akagi assigns him to guard Rukawa, the team's star player. Although Hanamichi initially struggles to keep up with Rukawa's agility, his determination and physicality ultimately earn him a victory. His teammates begin to see a glimmer of hope for their new recruit, and Hanamichi starts to realize the importance of being a team player.
Meanwhile, Akagi's sister Haruko continues to support Hanamichi and provides him with a new set of basketball shoes. She also encourages him to watch a videotape of Michael Jordan to improve his skills. Hanamichi is initially skeptical of the tape, but he soon becomes inspired by Jordan's incredible talent and work ethic.
As the episode comes to a close, the Shohoku team is preparing for their first official match against Ryonan High School.
