Significant Mother is a romantic comedy series that aired on The CW in 2015. The show follows Nate Marlowe (Josh Zuckerman), a budding restaurateur in Portland, Oregon, who returns home from a business trip to find that his best friend and roommate, Jimmy, has been having an affair with Nate's mother, Lydia Marlowe (Krista Allen).
Despite the initial shock and outrage of this discovery, Nate finds himself becoming increasingly attracted to Jimmy's recently dumped ex-girlfriend and Nate's long-time crush, Sam Dillinger (Emma Fitzpatrick). As Sam and Nate's relationship heats up, they must navigate the awkwardness and discomfort of Nate's mother still being a major presence in both of their lives.
Complicating matters even further is the addition of Atticus Adams (Jay Ali), Nate's other best friend and business partner, who also harbors feelings for Sam. The show explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the difficulties of navigating relationships with those closest to us.
Central to the show is the dynamic between Nate and Lydia, as they struggle to redefine their relationship in the wake of her affair with his best friend. Lydia is portrayed as a free-spirited and sexually adventurous woman, while Nate is more uptight and traditional in his values.
Throughout the season, the show introduces various romantic subplots, including Nate's father Harrison (Jonathan Silverman) attempting to rekindle his relationship with Lydia, and Atticus navigating his own feelings for a lesbian tattoo artist.
Significant Mother received mixed reviews upon its release, with some praising its comedic elements and chemistry between the cast, while others criticized its reliance on romantic tropes and lack of originality. Despite its mixed reception, the show has gained a cult following in the years since its cancellation.
Overall, Significant Mother offers a lighthearted and entertaining romp through the complexities of modern relationships, and a refreshingly unconventional take on the traditional sitcom format.
