Sick Note is a dark comedy series that premiered on Netflix in 2017. The show follows the life of Daniel Glass (Rupert Grint), a young man who works in a dead-end job and is struggling to make ends meet. Things take a turn for the worse when he is diagnosed with cancer, but soon after he receives the devastating news, his doctor discovers he made a mistake - he's actually perfectly healthy.
While, at first, Glass is devastated over the prospect of having cancer, he quickly realizes that the diagnosis could be an escape from his mundane life. The faked cancer diagnosis provides him with the attention and sympathy that he has always craved, and it sets in motion a series of events that leads to increasingly elaborate lies and hilarious mishaps.
Nick Frost plays Glass's friend, Dr. Ian Glennis, who is initially the one to misdiagnose Glass with cancer. Together, they quickly decide to keep the false diagnosis a secret from their friends and loved ones, leading to a web of lies that becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. But with the help of their mutual friend, Linda (Pippa Bennett-Warner), they continue to push the boundaries of credibility and hilarity as they navigate the consequences of their actions.
Meanwhile, Glass's boss, Kenny West (Don Johnson), is a narcissistic Jack-of-all-trades who takes every opportunity to showcase his own brilliance to anyone who will listen. When Glass uses his diagnosis to extract concessions from West at work, a tense power struggle ensues that culminates in a showdown at the office Christmas party.
In addition to the main cast, Sick Note features a slew of appearances by guest stars, including Lindsay Lohan, who plays Katerina West, Kenny's unpredictable daughter. Lohan's erratic behavior adds a layer of chaos to the already outrageous plot, which only moves further off the rails as the show progresses.
The first season of Sick Note consists of six episodes, each running approximately 25 minutes, making the series easily bingeable. The fast-paced comedy never lets up, with each episode introducing new twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. The characters are all deeply flawed and often make poor decisions, which leads to many awkward and cringe-worthy moments throughout the series.
However, the show is not without its heart. Glass's struggle to find meaning in his life is relatable, and as the series progresses, he comes to realize that the lies he's been telling have real consequences for those around him. Despite the fact that his character is initially unlikable, Grint's charm and comedic timing make it impossible not to root for him by the end of the season.
Overall, Sick Note is a fun, irreverent comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a great pick for anyone who enjoys dark humor, and the talented cast keeps the show engaging from start to finish. Although it only lasted for two seasons, the series wraps up its storyline in a satisfying way, making it a rewarding watch for anyone looking for a new comedy to binge.
