Ep 2. Grouchytown

  • January 1, 1989

In this episode of Sesame Street, titled "Grouchytown", Oscar the Grouch decides to take Big Bird and Elmo on a tour of his favorite place in the world - Grouchytown! The trio sets off on a journey through various grouch-related locations, encountering a variety of creatures along the way.

First, they visit the Grouchini Brothers' Junkyard, where they witness a group of grouch acrobats performing daring stunts using piles of junk as their props. Oscar is thrilled to see his friends performing for his guests, and he explains that every Grouchytown resident has their own unique skill or interest that makes them stand out from the crowd.

Next, they stop at the Grumpy Market, where they sample some of the town's famous dishes - everything from sour milk and moldy bread to rotten fruit and spoiled cheese. Big Bird and Elmo are hesitant to try the gross grub, but Oscar insists that it's all part of the Grouchytown experience.

As they continue their tour, they come across a group of Grouchytown residents who are participating in a grumbling competition. The object of the game is to see who can complain the loudest and longest, and Oscar is delighted to see his fellow grouches in action. However, Big Bird and Elmo are not enjoying themselves as much, finding it hard to understand why anyone would want to focus on being grumpy all the time.

Things take a surprising turn when the trio visits Grouchytown's Main Square, where they're greeted by the town's mayor - a friendly and cheerful monster named Grouchini. Despite his upbeat attitude, Grouchini is welcomed by the rest of the grouches, who appreciate his quirky leadership style and willingness to embrace his inner grouch.

Finally, Oscar brings Big Bird and Elmo to his own trashcan, where he takes great pride in showing them his personal collection of garbage. As the episode comes to a close, Oscar reflects on what he's learned from his Grouchytown tour - that even though they might seem grumpy and unpleasant to outsiders, the residents of Grouchytown are actually full of unique talents, interests, and qualities that make them special.

Overall, "Grouchytown" is a fun and educational episode of Sesame Street that explores the notion of embracing one's own identity and the diversity of different perspectives. Through the eyes of Oscar, Big Bird, and Elmo, viewers are encouraged to appreciate the individuality of everyone around them and to look beyond surface-level assumptions.
