Selena + Chef season 3 episode 1, titled "Selena + Kwame Onwuachi," features Grammy-winning artist Selena Gomez in the kitchen with celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi. As with previous episodes of the show, Selena is not an experienced cook and will be learning new techniques and recipes from Onwuachi.
The episode begins with Onwuachi guiding Selena through making a seafood gumbo from scratch. He explains the importance of building layers of flavor, and Selena excitedly chops vegetables and stirs the pot as they work together. Along the way, Onwuachi shares some of his personal story, including his journey from growing up in the Bronx to becoming a sought-after chef.
As they work on the gumbo, Selena and Onwuachi also discuss some of the challenges that came with cooking during the pandemic. Onwuachi reflects on having to shut down his restaurant and pivot to other forms of cooking during the lockdowns.
Later in the episode, Selena and Onwuachi move on to making a dessert: a peach cobbler with a sweet almond crumble. Selena expresses some nervousness about working with dough, but Onwuachi encourages her to dive in and try her best. With his guidance, she successfully cuts the dough into shapes for the cobbler topping and bakes the dessert to perfection.
Throughout the episode, Selena and Onwuachi have a fun and easy rapport, joking and laughing as they work together. Selena shares some of her own experiences with cooking, including the fact that she used to be afraid of touching raw meat. Onwuachi reciprocates by revealing that he was once too scared to use a kitchen knife when he first started cooking.
At the end of the episode, Selena and Onwuachi sit down together for a taste test of their dishes. Selena is delighted by the gumbo and marvels at how much flavor they were able to pack into it. The peach cobbler also receives rave reviews, with Onwuachi crediting Selena for her excellent job on the dough.
Throughout this entertaining and informative episode, Selena proves once again that she is eager to learn and try new things in the kitchen. She and Onwuachi make a great team, and viewers will undoubtedly be inspired to try out their own gumbo and cobbler recipes after watching them in action.
