In Sekirei season 1 episode 1, the audience is introduced to the protagonist, Minato Sahashi. He is a college student who is going through a rough patch in his life after flunking his entrance exams multiple times. After failing yet another exam, he heads out to a local park to clear his head. However, he encounters a beautiful and mysterious girl named Musubi, who is being pursued by a group of armed men.
The men are revealed to be Ashikabi, individuals who possess the ability to form a bond with Sekireis, genetically modified humans with special powers. It turns out that Musubi is a Sekirei, and she insists that Minato become her Ashikabi. The concept of Ashikabi is explained as a chosen one with powers to control Sekirei. They can form bonds with up to three Sekirei, and these bonds are extremely important, as the Sekirei are required to fight in a battle royale known as the "Sekirei Plan." Whichever Ashikabi harbors the most Sekirei wins, and the prize is a mysterious and powerful object known as the "Sekirei Wish."
Initially hesitant, Minato attempts to escape from the situation. However, he quickly finds out that the Ashikabi pursuing Musubi will stop at nothing to capture her. Forced into action, Minato forms a contract with Musubi, becoming her Ashikabi. As they run away from the Ashikabi, it becomes apparent that Musubi is not the only Sekirei out there, as they come across multiple other Sekirei. The episode ends with Minato realizing that he's in for a challenging and dangerous journey.
Throughout the first episode of Sekirei, the show establishes a fun and exciting premise. The idea of having various genetically modified humans with powers engaged in a battle royale for a powerful object is not a new concept, but Sekirei manages to add its own spin to it. The show depicts the Sekirei in a unique manner, with all of them having challenges and personalities that differentiate them from one another. Furthermore, the show's humor shines through in a scene where Minato attempts to lift Musubi, only to injure his back. Musubi's dialogue which is slightly flirtatious adds to the dynamic between the characters, which the audience learns will further develop as the series progresses.
The animation quality in the first episode of the show is quite impressive. The fights are beautifully choreographed and feature flashy, extraordinary animations. It is evident that the show had a good budget, and it's translated into the delightful visual art style. The color palettes are vivid and serve to enhance the character design, which is, plain and simple, cool.
In conclusion, the first episode of Sekirei sets up the show's world and its characters. It provides enough background to explain the Ashikabi-Sekirei relationship, while also keeping it entertaining. The premise is well established, and it's clear that the show will be heavily focused on the action. Minato's character is relatable, and the episode ends with a clear feeling of danger which will drive the audience to watch episode 2. Overall, Sekirei episode 1 is compelling and is sure to leave the audience wanting more.
