Jerry Seinfeld's ninth season is still going strong with the sixth episode hilariously titled "The Merv Griffin Show". The episode starts off with Jerry finding a discarded set of The Merv Griffin Show in a dumpster which he decided to take home. Kramer then proceeds with his latest scheme of transforming his apartment into a talk show set.
Jerry gets a bit vocal about the set as he thinks it is a piece of junk, but Kramer argues that it is an opportunity for him to realize his dream of hosting his very own talk show. As a result, he moves the furniture around to fit the set, bringing his sidekick Newman to help him out as they install cameras and new seating for the audience.
The entire set-up is so complete that Elaine, who later invites herself to join the pair, says that she is quite impressed, except for the fact that Kramer's set just might be missing the actual Merv Griffin. That's when things get interesting, with Kramer deciding to improvise. Newman then suggests that Kramer should audition guests and Jerry offers to help audition the guests.
All sorts of interesting and hilarious characters end up auditioning for Kramer's electric talk show, including a man with a hat shaped like a lamp, a woman who makes really good gifts by reading people's dreams, and many more. Jerry, however, keeps getting the whole thing off track since he keeps getting interrupted by phone calls and various beepers.
Jerry's storyline sees him getting a very unsatisfactory meal at a restaurant, but finds its way into Kramer's talk show when he and Newman invite him on as a guest. There are more twists and turns to this episode, with George's relationship falling apart after the burning of his fiancée's wheelchair, and Elaine dealing with an overly-enthusiastic saleswoman, but Kramer's talk show turns out to be the real highlight of the episode.
At the end of the day, Jerry and the other cast members help Kramer tear down the talk show set and we are left wondering, what will his next big idea be? The episode manages to pack in plenty of laughs, silliness and some clever observations that make it one of Seinfeld's greatest moments.
Overall, "The Merv Griffin Show" is a classic episode of the series and certainly lives up to the show's reputation as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. The performances from Seinfeld and the rest of the cast are all spot-on, with plenty of great one-liners, hilarious gags, and absurd situations that make this episode a must-see for any fan of the show. It's definitely one of those episodes that you'll be quoting lines from for days after you see it.
