Jerry, George, and Elaine go out for a casual lunch. George is in a bad mood as he has just broken up with his girlfriend, and he is venting to Jerry and Elaine about it. Elaine tells them that they both should get over each other as they were always arguing, and George's girlfriend would always order a big salad every time they went out to eat.

Later, George is walking with Elaine, and they run into his ex-girlfriend, who is carrying a giant salad. Elaine praises her for the salad, and George fumes as he believes that she only ordered it because she wanted to appear healthy and virtuous and also to make him look bad as he never cared enough to order anything remotely healthy.

Meanwhile, Kramer has fallen in love with the cashier at Monk's Cafe, who is also carrying a big salad. He asks her out, but she tells him that she has a boyfriend. Kramer finds out that her boyfriend is reclusive and hasn't left his apartment for several years. He sees this as an opportunity to sneak into her apartment by pretending to be her boyfriend's doctor and check out her things so that he can see what her interests are and impress her.

Jerry agrees to help George confront his ex-girlfriend about the big salad incident, but things get complicated when Elaine accidentally reveals that it was actually she who paid for the salad. This sends George into a spiral of anger as he feels as though his girlfriend is trying to control situations and make him look bad, but is always taking credit for things that he has done. Finally, Jerry confronts his ex-girlfriend and declares that George paid for the big salad.

The episode ends with Elaine being offered a job as a personal assistant to a wealthy eccentric, which she happily accepts. Kramer pretends to be the boyfriend's long-lost son and successfully charms the woman he likes. George is upset that Jerry did not stick to their plan of outing his ex's big-salad fib, but Jerry reminds him that in the end, it doesn't really matter who paid for the salad.

Overall, "The Big Salad" is a classic Seinfeld episode that ponders the idea of credit, and how people often take credit or give credit where it is not always due. It also introduces some quirky new characters in the form of the cashier and Elaine's new employer, both of which will make an impact on the rest of the season.
