Jerry is discussing his upcoming race with his trainer, who informs him that he will be running against a woman. Deterring the trainer's plan to pit him against someone of the opposite sex, Jerry informs Elaine of the situation, but she handles the news with skepticism. Meanwhile, Kramer decides to implement the same strategies he used to train for the New York City Marathon in his training to not only beat Jerry but also to beat all New York athletes in the upcoming race.
Kramer quickly discovers one of his weaknesses is that he needs a place to sleep, as he cannot afford a room at a hotel. So he finds shelter in the showers of the health club where Jerry trains, unbeknownst to his neighbor. Kramer's aim is to get a good night's sleep before the race so that he is fresh enough to beat Jerry. While Kramer focuses on bettering his muscles and putting his strength to the maximum, Jerry strives to obtain mental strength to beat his competition.
In the meantime, Elaine is faced with a perplexed intellectual debate regarding female and male race competitors, and further debates whether Jerry will have the guts to beat the woman in the race. As the anticipation builds towards the race, Kramer reveals that he has been secretly living in the showers of the health club and asks Jerry to allow him to use his apartment for a night's sleep so that he can be energized and defeat him.
Jerry acquiesces to Kramer's plea, but he unknowingly sabotages his plans for the race when he sleeps with the woman whom he expects to compete against in the race. When Kramer arrives at Jerry's apartment, he is met with the woman sleeping in the bed, and he becomes furious that his strategy to beat Jerry in the race has been compromised.
As the day of the race finally arrives, both men are exhausted and not prepared for what they are about to face. Kramer steps into the wrong starting area, and to the amazement of the crowd, he runs the entire marathon in record time while no one is aware. He declares himself the winner of the race. However, Jerry is not far behind and sets a new marathon record, beating Kramer's record. Meanwhile, Elaine finds herself at the center of a debate over gender roles in sports as she sees a prominent athlete give up his masculinity, asserting that he wants instead to undergo a sex change operation.
