Jerry and Elaine are offered two tickets to a new production of "Pagliacci" by George's girlfriend, a pianist who is playing for the opera. They accept and invite Kramer to join them, but he declines, preferring to see the Knicks game instead.
At the opera, Jerry and Elaine are seated in the front row, but they have trouble enjoying the show because of a couple of unsavory characters sitting behind them, one of whom coughs incessantly. They try to switch seats, but it only makes things worse.
Meanwhile, George tries to break up with his girlfriend, but she is so self-absorbed that she doesn't even notice. He decides to take drastic action and insults her at the piano recital she is performing at, causing her to break up with him instead.
Back at the opera, the situation has escalated and Jerry and Elaine are now embroiled in a feud with the cougher and his accomplice. In an attempt to get them thrown out, Jerry and Elaine frantically search for an usher, finally finding one just as the show ends.
As they leave the opera, they spot Kramer with a bootleg recording of the Knicks game. They beg him to let them listen, but he refuses, citing the importance of experiencing live events firsthand. The episode ends with the trio walking off into the night, still arguing about the merits of live versus recorded entertainment.
