Jerry and Elaine run into a problem during their journey from a shopping mall as they find that their car stinks due to a foul odor, which they can't identify. The stench is so severe that it ends up bothering everyone around them, but the duo is unable to get rid of it, despite trying everything they can think of.
To make matters worse, Jerry agrees to take a ride with a woman he's interested in, but realizes that he has no other option than to take her in their smelly car. Trying to save face, Jerry sprays air freshener in the car before she gets in, but the cover-up fails to fool her. Elaine also has her own set of problems, with her boss in the passenger seat. As they drive, the foul stench wafts into the air, causing the passengers to keep rolling down the windows.
Meanwhile, George is trying to get out of a big night with Susan's parents, due to his mounting fears about his soon-to-be in-laws. He feels that they're too sophisticated and that he could never live up to their expectations. After unsuccessfully trying to get Jerry to help him, George finally comes up with a scheme to make himself unlikable and avoid going, with comically problematic results.
As the car-stink situation grows increasingly out of hand, Jerry is confronted by a cop, who mistakes them for criminals who're stashing contraband. Jerry tries to explain to the officer that it's only the smell, but it only seems to incriminate them further. As he attempts to save himself from the law, the foul odor becomes the center of attention, with the cop joining in the investigation.
With all of this going on, the four friends come together at the end of the episode to share their stories. They all seem to come to the realization that there are times when you just can't win, and you must accept defeat. The theme is carried through particularly well with the idea that no matter how they tried, they weren't able to combat the smell in the car. The episode ends on a high note, with the group laughing over the ridiculousness of their problems.
