During World War II, Belgium is overrun by the Nazis who establish their headquarters in Brussels. A small underground resistance movement, called Lifeline, gathers intelligence and smuggles Allied airmen to safety. In Secret Army season 1 episode 9 titled "Too Near Home," the Lifeline network is at risk of being exposed when they are suspected of bombing a German munitions factory.
The episode begins with Albert Foiret, the owner of the Cafe Candide, receiving a call for help from Madeleine Duclos. Madeleine, a member of the Lifeline network, has been injured while setting explosives at a German munitions factory located on the outskirts of Brussels. Albert rushes to her aid, but when he reaches her, the Gestapo arrives, and they both narrowly escape capture. Madeleine is taken to a hospital for treatment, and Albert returns to the Cafe to assess the damage.
Meanwhile, Colonel Kessler, the head of the German security services in Brussels, receives information that the Lifeline group is responsible for the bomb attack. He orders his men to investigate and find the people responsible. Kessler is convinced that Lifeline is led by a senior British intelligence officer, and he is determined to catch them.
As Albert and Madeleine recover from their injuries, they are visited by Lisa Colbert, the niece of a British diplomat who has been working with Lifeline. Lisa informs them that the German authorities know about the munitions factory attack and that they are closing in on the Lifeline network. This news unsettles Albert, and he decides to hold a meeting to discuss the situation.
At the meeting, Albert and the other members of Lifeline try to assess the damage caused by the munitions factory attack. They are surprised when Lisa arrives with a plan to store explosives in a stable at her uncle's estate. Lisa believes that the estate is secure and that it will be the perfect location for Lifeline's next operation. Albert is hesitant at first, but he ultimately agrees to the plan.
As Lisa and the other members prepare for the operation, Colonel Kessler's men continue to investigate the bomb attack. They question everyone in the area, including the owner of the stables where the explosives are being stored. The owner becomes nervous and decides to inform the Gestapo of the activities at the stable.
With the Gestapo closing in, Albert and the other members of Lifeline are forced to flee the area. They must abandon their plans and find a new location to store the explosives. The situation becomes more complicated when Lisa, who had been working out of her uncle's embassy, is kidnapped by the Gestapo. The Lifeline network is left to wonder if Lisa has been compromised and if their operation has been exposed.
"Too Near Home" is a gripping episode that highlights the risks and dangers faced by the members of the Lifeline network. The tension and sense of danger never let up, making this a must-see episode for fans of the show. As the first season draws to a close, viewers are left with many unanswered questions and a sense of unease about the future of Lifeline. This episode is a great example of the show's ability to create suspense and to present complex characters dealing with life and death situations in a time of war.
