In the sixth episode of Secret Army season 1, titled "Growing Up," we follow the emotional struggle of two young adults caught in the midst of war. The episode begins with a flashback where we see a teenage girl named Lisa following her brother, Jan, to a secret meeting of resistance fighters. Young, fearless, and idealistic, Lisa is eager to join the fight against the Nazis.
Cut to the present day, and we find Lisa working for Lifeline, a resistance group that helps Allied airmen escape from German-occupied Belgium. Lisa is tasked with assisting a young, injured Canadian airman named Jack who has been brought to Brussels for medical treatment. Lisa is immediately drawn to Jack's boyish charm and good looks, and the two quickly strike up a friendly rapport.
As Lisa spends more time with Jack, she finds herself feeling conflicted between her duties to the resistance and her personal feelings for him. This becomes even more complicated when Jack reveals to Lisa that he has fallen in love with her. Lisa is torn between her desire to be with Jack and a sense of duty to the resistance and her country.
Meanwhile, Jan, Lisa's brother, has also been struggling with his own emotional conflicts. Jan is in love with a young Jewish woman named Ruth, but because of the anti-Semitic laws put in place by the occupying Germans, their love is forbidden. Jan is torn between his love for Ruth and his loyalty to the resistance.
As Lisa and Jack's relationship develops, Jan becomes increasingly jealous and conflicted. He accuses Lisa of putting her personal desires above the needs of the resistance, and tensions rise between the siblings.
The episode comes to a dramatic conclusion when Lifeline becomes aware of a planned Gestapo raid on the hospital where Jack is being treated. Lisa convinces Jack to go on the run with her, and they flee the hospital together. On their way to safety, they encounter Jan, who has been tasked by the resistance to stop any Allied airmen from falling into German hands. Jan is faced with a difficult decision, as he must choose between his loyalty to the resistance and his love for his sister.
In "Growing Up," we see the emotional toll that war takes on young people, and the difficult choices they must make in the face of danger and uncertainty. The episode is a poignant exploration of love, loyalty, and sacrifice, and is sure to leave fans of the series on the edge of their seats.
