In the Sealab 2021 season 3 episode 3, entitled "Red Dawn," the crew faces a combination of unexpected events, as it often happens in this animated show full of humor and absurdity. Under the command of Captain Murphy, the group of marine biologists residing in the eponymous underwater laboratory are facing some challenging situations.
The episode opens with the crew gathering in the main room, all wearing their best outfits for the significant event that they all seem thrilled about. A moment later, it becomes clear that they are celebrating the 13th birthday of Stormy, the resident biologist and marine-life expert. Amidst the party, Stormy receives a present from Dr. Quinn that takes her by surprise. The situation then quickly evolves into a childish quarrel, where everyone starts competing over who provides the best present.
Meanwhile, other concurrent events take place, creating a sense of chaos. For one, Captain Murphy is hell-bent on trying to get a new coffee machine via a mail-order catalog. His obsession with the device is bordering on the unhealthy. Then, Debbie Dupree, the station's announcer, is trying to get a promotional advertisement recorded for her new "Bikini Bottoms" product line. Her efforts are met with snickering and open mockery from the crew.
Through all of this, an incredible storm is brewing on the horizon that threatens to change the dynamic of the group. As the storm grows in strength and draws closer, the crew watches as the usually playful and relaxed Captain Murphy becomes increasingly nervous. The crew has seen storms like these before, and they know what they can do – knock out essential systems and render the entire station inoperable.
As a precaution, the team goes through a series of drills to ensure everyone's safety. While the storm might not have directly threatened their facility, it does mean they are stuck there for as long as the storm continues to rage. Tensions quickly mount as it becomes clear that they are all in for an extended stay. The crew members begin to get on each other's nerves, and the close confines of the underwater lab make matters worse. Despite the mounting tensions, however, there is a growing sense of camaraderie between the characters.
Throughout the episode, there is a sense of something brewing beneath the surface. Something that will ultimately reveal itself as things take a thrilling and unexpected turn.
On the whole, "Red Dawn" is an excellent example of Sealab 2021's blend of humor, absurdism, and pop culture references. The episode takes viewers on an exciting, often hilarious, and occasionally touching journey. It explores some of the fundamental challenges of living and working together as a group and the ways in which people come together in the face of adversity. Whether you're watching for the humor, the characters, or to see what happens next, it's an excellent addition to the series.
