  • April 21, 2018

For Those in Peril is the twentieth episode of Sea Rescue season 7. This episode follows the dedicated rescuers of SeaWorld and their efforts in rescuing animals in peril. The episode starts with a call from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reporting a stranded manatee in the Caloosahatchee River in Florida. The rescue team rushes to the scene where they find a young manatee that has become separated from its mother. The team assesses the young manatee’s overall health and determines that it needs to receive treatment before they can return it to the wild.

After evaluating the injuries to the manatee, the team decides to transport it to SeaWorld Orlando for rehab and recovery. The team meticulously prepares the manatee for transport, ensuring it is comfortable and secure in its transportation crate. Once safely transported to SeaWorld Orlando, the team sets about repairing the manatee’s injuries. They have to wrestle with the fact that this adorable creature will need to be separated from its mother for some time, and delicate care is taken to ensure the baby manatee's well-being. The SeaWorld rescue team works tirelessly, providing 24-hour care and attention to the young manatee until it is ready to return to the wild.

Next, the episode moves to the coastal region of Maine. Here, a young Seal pup has been spotted alone on a deserted beach. With no mother in sight and the Seal pup seeming disoriented, the alarm is raised. A local resident contacts the Marine Mammal Center, and the SeaWorld rescue team is called into action to help. The team quickly deploys to Maine to rescue the young animal. The team carefully manages to scoop up the seal pup and takes it in for evaluation.

The team determines that the seal pup seems to be malnourished and dehydrated, and its rescue challenge intensifies. Again, the team provides round-the-clock care so that the Seal can recover. The team ensures it gets proper nutrition and rest. Once it becomes apparent that the Seal pup's health has stabilized, the team embarks on a seaside release back into the ecosystem.

The episode returns to Florida for a massive sea turtle release. The team is assisting in the release of over 1,000 sea turtles back into the ocean. Most of these turtles were rescued as hatchlings from nests along the Florida coast and were raised at the SeaWorld Orlando rescue center. The turtles have been carefully acclimatized to ocean conditions and are ready for release.

The SeaWorld and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission teams work together to transport the sea turtles to the release point: an isolated beach area. Once there, the turtles are released in two groups. The first 500 turtles are released, and the team collects data on the turtles, such as their size and weight and sets them free. The next 500 are then released in the same way. The scene is emotional as onlookers watch hundreds of tiny turtles make their way back to the water, ready to begin their ocean journey.

Finally, the episode returns to Florida as the rescue team is called to help a stranded dolphin. The dolphin has beached itself on a sandbar in the Indian River. The team must strategize a plan on how they are going to get the dolphin back to the ocean. Challenges arise as they have to release the dolphin back into an area deep enough for it to clear. With a thoughtful plan and sheer determination, the team manages to release the dolphin safely back into the ocean.

For Those in Peril is an emotionally gripping episode which showcases the work of the SeaWorld rescue team and their commitment to rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife. From caring for a young manatee, rescuing a malnourished seal pup, releasing a thousand baby turtles back into the ocean to finally saving a stranded dolphin’s life, this episode showcases the dedication of the SeaWorld rescue team. The episode highlights the challenges and complexities of marine animal rescue and the enormous value of animal welfare. It is sure to inspire all animal lovers and environmentally conscious people with its impactful message.
