Sea Patrol season 1 episode 4, titled "Irukandji," follows the crew of HMAS Hammersley as they encounter a number of challenges while on active patrol duty in the Coral Sea.
The episode begins with the crew responding to a distress call from a yacht that has been attacked by pirates. The yacht's crew is attempting to fend off the attackers, but they are outmatched and outgunned. Hammersley arrives on the scene and begins to engage the pirates, ultimately forcing them to retreat. However, the yacht's captain has been badly injured in the attack, and Hammersley must transport him to safety for medical treatment.
As the crew tries to help the injured captain, they receive another distress call – this time from a nearby gas platform that is in danger of exploding. Hammersley must move quickly to evacuate the platform's workers before a catastrophic explosion occurs. The crew's efforts are complicated by the presence of a group of environmental activists who are protesting the platform's operations and refuse to evacuate.
Against this backdrop, Hammersley must also navigate the dangerous waters of the Coral Sea, which are home to a number of deadly sea creatures, including the irukandji jellyfish, one of the most venomous creatures in the world. When one of the crew members is stung by an irukandji, the team must act quickly to save his life before the venom causes irreversible damage.
Despite these challenges, the Hammersley crew ultimately manages to successfully evacuate the gas platform and transport the injured captain to safety. Along the way, they learn valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of remaining calm under pressure. Ultimately, "Irukandji" is a thrilling and action-packed episode that offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by those who serve in Australia's maritime defense forces.
