Sea Hunt is a popular American adventure television series that aired from 1958 to 1961. It starred Lloyd Bridges as former Navy frogman Mike Nelson, a scuba diver who undertakes various underwater assignments in search of lost treasure, rescuing children and helping law enforcement agencies in solving crimes, among others.
Season 1, Episode 1 is named "Sixty Feet Below" and aired on January 4, 1958. In this episode, Mike Nelson is hired by a wealthy businessman named J.B. Wilson to recover his son's boat, which sank in 60 feet of water while carrying the family's valuable possessions. In order to retrieve the boat, Mike must dive down to the bottom of the sea and use a special balloon to raise it to the surface.
The episode begins with Mike diving down to the sunken boat in order to assess the damage. While down there, he discovers that the boat has been stripped of all its valuables, including a valuable painting that Wilson had been hoping to recover. Mike also sees that the boat has been sabotaged, with its hull pried open.
Back on the surface, Mike reports the theft to Wilson and begins to investigate the circumstances of the sinking. He suspects that the boat was intentionally sunk and that the thief is still lurking nearby. He teams up with a local fisherman named Pete Williams, who helps Mike in his investigation.
Mike discovers a diving regulator near the sunken boat, which leads him to believe that the thief must be using a diving suit. He enlists Pete's help in searching for the thief and they eventually come across a suspicious-looking boat in the area. They investigate the boat and find a damaged diving suit hidden on board.
Using his expertise as a former Navy frogman, Mike is able to see that the damage on the suit came from the reef near the sunken boat. He confronts the owner of the boat, a local pearl diver named Tom Andrews, who admits to stealing the valuables from the boat. However, he maintains his innocence in the sinking of the boat.
Mike isn't convinced and continues to investigate. He discovers that Andrews was paid to sabotage the boat by an unknown person, who he believes is still nearby. Mike and Pete team up once again to track down the mastermind behind the sinking.
The episode climaxes with Mike and Pete discovering a boat anchored near the crime scene, belonging to a shady individual named Red Ludlow. Ludlow confesses to being the one who paid Andrews to sink the boat, in a bid to get his hands on Wilson's valuable painting. He attempts to escape on his boat, but Mike and Pete give chase and are able to apprehend him.
In the end, Mike is successful in his assignment and is able to recover Wilson's boat and the stolen valuables. Justice is also served as the guilty parties are caught and brought to justice.
Overall, "Sixty Feet Below" is an exciting and action-packed episode that sets the tone for the rest of the series.
