In Scrubs season 8 episode 14, titled "My Soul On Fire, Part 1," the main focus is on J.D. and Turk's friendship. J.D. is dealing with unresolved issues surrounding his father's death, and Turk is trying to get a promotion to Chief of Surgery.
The episode opens with a flashback to when Turk and J.D. were first starting their residency at Sacred Heart Hospital. They meet Dr. Kelso, the apprehensive Chief of Medicine, who warns them that they'll need to have thick skin to survive in the hospital.
Cut to present day, where J.D. and Turk are now attending physicians at Sacred Heart and still best friends. J.D. is feeling particularly down about his father's death, which happened when J.D. was a child. Despite his best efforts to move on, he's still haunted by it. Turk tries to cheer him up by enlisting Dr. Cox, J.D.'s mentor, to participate in their usual breakfast ritual. But even this doesn't seem to bring J.D. out of his funk.
Meanwhile, Turk is interviewing for the Chief of Surgery position. He's up against his friend, Dr. Mickhead, and they're both trying to curry favor with Dr. Kelso. While Dr. Mickhead is trying to be "one of the guys," Turk is setting up lunch meetings with Dr. Kelso's wife and children.
However, Turk hits a snag when he realizes that the current Chief of Surgery, Dr. Wen, doesn't want to leave his position. In fact, Dr. Wen has taken Turk under his wing and is teaching him some of the more intricate surgical procedures. This puts Turk in a difficult spot: should he try to usurp Dr. Wen and risk ruining their friendship (and possibly his reputation), or should he back off and wait for Dr. Wen to retire?
The episode is titled "My Soul On Fire" for a reason. J.D.'s unresolved issues with his father's death are causing him to act out in strange ways. He starts binge-eating, obsessing over a patient who shares his father's name, and even setting his apartment on fire (albeit accidentally). Dr. Cox tries to get through to him, but J.D. insists that he's okay and just needs some time to work through his emotional turmoil.
As the episode ends, Turk decides to back off from the Chief of Surgery position and wait for a better opportunity to come along. J.D., on the other hand, seems to be spiraling out of control. He's convinced that his father's spirit is trying to communicate with him and starts to see signs everywhere he goes. He even starts speaking to an imaginary version of his father.
Overall, "My Soul On Fire, Part 1" is a poignant look at the power of friendship and the ways in which our past traumas can continue to haunt us. With strong performances from Zach Braff as J.D. and Donald Faison as Turk, the episode is a standout in an already strong season of Scrubs.
