As the twelfth episode of the second season of Scrubs, "My New Old Friend" follows Dr. John "J.D." Dorian as he navigates the ever-complicated world of Sacred Heart Hospital. The episode opens with J.D. returning to work after taking time off to mourn the death of his favorite patient, George Valentine. Meanwhile, Dr. Christopher Turk is hired to perform a procedure on a patient that could potentially save her life.

As J.D. attempts to move on from his grief, he reconnects with an old friend from college, Drew Suffin. Drew is in town for a conference and J.D. is excited to catch up with his friend. Drew is a successful representative for a major drug company and offers J.D. samples of a new anti-depressant.

At first, J.D. is hesitant to try the medication, as he is still dealing with the emotional aftermath of George Valentine's death. However, Drew is persistent and convinces J.D. to give the antidepressant a try.

Meanwhile, Dr. Turk faces his own set of challenges as he struggles to perform the high-risk procedure on his patient. His initial attempt is unsuccessful and he must find a way to overcome his fear and self-doubt to save the patient's life.

As J.D. begins taking the anti-depressant, he experiences some unwanted side-effects that interfere with his work at the hospital. He becomes increasingly irritable and erratic, causing concern among his colleagues. Although J.D. initially tries to keep his behavior under control, he eventually explodes in a fit of rage and embarrasses himself in front of his peers.

Feeling humiliated, J.D. attempts to hide from his coworkers but is eventually confronted by his friend, Dr. Elliot Reid. Elliot introduces him to a patient who has also struggled with depression and offers J.D. some much-needed perspective.

Throughout the episode, J.D. must learn to navigate the complicated world of mental health and the pressures of his job. He ultimately learns that it is okay to ask for help and finds a new sense of purpose and connection with his colleagues. Meanwhile, Dr. Turk successfully completes the surgery and saves his patient's life, proving that he is a talented doctor who is capable of rising to every challenge.

Overall, "My New Old Friend" is a nuanced and thoughtful exploration of the challenges that medical professionals face both in their personal and professional lives. The episode combines humor and heart to create a compelling and relatable story that is sure to resonate with audiences.
