In the season six premiere of Schitt's Creek, titled "Smoke Signals," the Rose family finds themselves feeling emotional as they prepare to say goodbye to their beloved town. With their stay in Schitt's Creek coming to an end, Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis attempt to move forward and find new opportunities, but not without a few emotional goodbyes first.
Johnny, played by Eugene Levy, is focused on selling the town as quickly as possible, something he feels he must do in order to move on. Meanwhile, David, played by Dan Levy, is having a difficult time saying goodbye to his boyfriend, Patrick, played by Noah Reid. The two share a touching moment at the beginning of the episode before David begins packing up his clothing store, Rose Apothecary.
Alexis, played by Annie Murphy, is struggling with her decision to leave Ted behind in Schitt's Creek. The two had just reunited after Ted's time away working abroad, and Alexis isn't sure she's ready for another round of long-distance. As a distraction, Alexis spends much of the episode with her new friend, Twyla, played by Sarah Levy.
Moira, played by Catherine O'Hara, seems to be the only one who is truly ready to move on from Schitt's Creek. She spends much of the episode reminiscing on her time in the town, specifically when she played the role of a psychic in the community theater production. There is a touching scene where Moira and Johnny share a moment on the balcony and reminisce on the past.
Throughout the episode, the Rose family is confronted by former residents of Schitt's Creek who have come to say goodbye. Some interactions are sweet, while others are awkward and uncomfortable. Additionally, the Rose family is faced with the reality that their future is uncertain. They are moving on from a place where they had built a life and learned to love each other.
Overall, the season six premiere of Schitt's Creek is emotional and bittersweet. The show does an excellent job of capturing the essence of each character as they face the next chapter in their lives. There is a sense that although they are leaving behind the town that changed them, the experiences they had and the relationships they formed will stay with them forever.
