The Substitute is the seventh episode of the second season of the popular teen sitcom Saved by the Bell. The episode revolves around the student body at Bayside High School as they deal with a new substitute teacher who has a very different approach to education than they're used to.
The substitute teacher, Mr. Belding, is the brother of the school principal Mr. Belding, and immediately upon his arrival, he makes it clear that he has different teaching methods than the regular teachers. He insists on calling the students by their first names, allows them to eat and drink in the classroom, and even encourages them to listen to music during class.
At first, many of the students are excited about their new, more relaxed environment, but soon they begin to realize that Mr. Belding's methods aren't all they're cracked up to be. Zack Morris, the show's lead character, quickly picks up on the fact that Mr. Belding doesn't actually know anything about the subject he's teaching - history - and is simply giving them busy work to keep them occupied.
Meanwhile, Jessie, one of the show's other main characters, is struggling with the fact that her dad is getting remarried. She's worried that her new stepmom will take away from the special bond she has with her father, and spends much of the episode trying to come to terms with her feelings.
As the episode continues, the students become increasingly frustrated with Mr. Belding's lackluster teaching methods, and eventually decide to stage a protest. They refuse to do any more of his busy work until he agrees to actually teach them something about history.
The climax of the episode comes when Mr. Belding finally agrees to take his teaching seriously, and ends up inspiring the students with a passionate lesson about the American Revolution. The students are impressed by his newfound enthusiasm, and by the end of the episode, they have a newfound respect for their substitute teacher.
Overall, The Substitute is a fun, lighthearted episode that deals with typical teen issues like rebellion and family dynamics, while also delivering a positive message about the importance of education and teaching. Fans of Saved by the Bell will love seeing their favorite characters in action again, while newcomers to the show will be entertained by the classic '90s sitcom style that made it such a hit.
