In season 36, episode 9 of Saturday Night Live, Paul Rudd hosts an episode for the third time alongside musical guest Paul McCartney. As soon as the opening credits roll, viewers are in for a great episode of SNL filled with hilarious skits, parodies, and guest appearances.
The show kicks off with a cold open featuring Kristen Wiig as Kathie Lee Gifford, who is joined by Hoda Kotb (played by Vanessa Bayer) to discuss holiday cocktails. Soon after, Paul Rudd appears in a skit in which he plays a man who discovers that the world is ending that night at midnight, and must scramble to cram a lifetime of experiences into his remaining hours.
The episode also includes a mock commercial for the “WC Seat,” a toilet seat that incorporates social media features into the bathroom experience. The product is advertised by Kristen Wiig playing a mom who can’t seem to keep her smartphone off, even in the bathroom.
Paul McCartney joins in on the comedic fun as well, appearing in a variety of skits throughout the night. One memorable skit features Paul Rudd and Paul McCartney boasting about being named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2010 and 1967, respectively. Later in the show, McCartney takes the stage as the musical guest, performing “Jet,” “Band on the Run,” and “A Day in the Life / Give Peace a Chance” to a thrilled audience.
One standout skit from the night features Paul Rudd as Larry, a man who can’t seem to catch a break after he’s mistaken for a beloved children's character and chased by a group of children. The skit is filled with hilarious moments, from Larry lunging into a stranger’s car to escape the kids, to the reveal that he’s in fact not the beloved character the children were seeking. Another memorable skit features Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis as siblings hosting a cooking show, where things go awry when their father (played by Bill Hader) continually interrupts the cooking process with bizarre comments.
The guest appearances don’t stop there - Andy Samberg pops up in a series of skits parodying viral videos, and former SNL cast member Will Forte appears as a guest in a hilarious skit about a Thanksgiving gathering gone awry.
Overall, season 36, episode 9 of Saturday Night Live is a hilarious and entertaining episode that showcases the comedic chops of both host Paul Rudd and musical guest Paul McCartney. The writing is sharp and the cast is firing on all cylinders, making for a must-watch night of television.
