In Saturday Night Live season 35 episode 18, Tina Fey returns to host the show for the third time and is joined by musical guest, Justin Bieber, for his debut SNL performance.
The episode kicks off with an amusing sketch in which Fey portrays Sarah Palin and announces her intention to run for president in 2012. In typical SNL fashion, Fey's Palin takes jabs at the media and politicians while giving her own unique spin on current events.
Next up is the Weekend Update, with Seth Meyers delivering his trademark news satire and one-liners. The segment features several notable guest appearances including Fred Armisen as Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kenan Thompson as Al Sharpton, and Kristen Wiig as a character named Aunt Linda.
Continuing the show's political theme, the next sketch features Fey as Hillary Clinton and Amy Poehler as Katie Couric in an interview segment. The two engage in a back-and-forth play on women's rights and feminism in the world of politics.
Following the Hillary and Katie sketch, a series of somewhat less-political skits take the stage, including a fictional movie trailer featuring Fey and Jason Sudeikis, a fake commercial for a new cologne called "Secret Word," and a spoof on the dating game show, The Bachelor.
As the episode progresses, Fey makes several hilarious appearances as her popular SNL characters, including her famous stint as a student in high school who has lived in a van down by the river, Matt Foley. In another sketch, Fey and Wiig perform an endearing yet hilarious musical number about friendship.
Closing out the show, Bieber hits the stage for a trio of performances, including his breakout single "Baby," as well as "U Smile" and "Never Let You Go." The young heartthrob proves to be a crowd-pleaser while flaunting his signature style of dance-heavy performances.
Overall, Saturday Night Live season 35 episode 18 provides a great mix of political satire and wacky comedy, with Fey and Bieber serving as an entertaining tag-team combo.
