Samurai Flamenco is a Japanese anime television series produced by the anime studio Manglobe and Aniplex. It first aired in Japan in October 2013 and ran for 22 episodes. The show is directed by Takahiro Omori and features music by Kenji Tamai. The premise of Samurai Flamenco revolves around the career of a male model named Masayoshi Hazama, who dreams of becoming a superhero. Hazama is an idealistic young man who believes that he can make a difference in the world by fighting crime and protecting the innocent. However, he has no superhero skills or abilities, and his plans are often met with ridicule from his friends and colleagues.
Despite this, Hazama is determined to become a superhero and begins to take matters into his own hands. He adopts the alter ego of Samurai Flamenco, wearing a red and blue samurai outfit and wielding nothing but a wooden toy pistol. From here on, he decided to rid the city of its various petty nuisances such as littering and jaywalking before taking on super-powered villains hell-bent on destruction.
The early episodes of Samurai Flamenco focus on Hazama's attempts to become a superhero and his various encounters with low-level criminals. As the series progresses, it takes on a more serialized structure, with a larger narrative arc building in the background of each episode.
Hazama's ambitions as Samurai Flamenco are further complicated when he encounters a real-life superhero, named Hidenori Goto, who is employed as a police officer. Goto is initially skeptical of Hazama's goals and tries to convince him to give up his superhero aspirations. However, Goto ultimately becomes drawn into Hazama's adventures and joins him in his fight against crime.
The show includes an eclectic cast of characters, ranging from Hazama's flamboyant manicurist and his cat, to the various villains he encounters on his missions. Each character's portrayal and background has been given a great deal of care and detail. The animation of Samurai Flamenco is as well very beautiful and smooth, giving the show an overall lighthearted feel- until it twists.
All in all, Samurai Flamenco is a quirky and unique take on the superhero genre, combining comedy, action and a dash of drama to create something entirely new. It is recommended to people looking for a new take on the superhero genre with a lot of humor, though it should be noted that the show takes a more serious turn halfway through its run.
