Sam & Max Freelance Police is an animated television series produced by Shout Factory that was originally broadcasted from 1997 to 1998. The show follows two anthropomorphic characters, a dog named Sam and a rabbit-like creature named Max, who work as private investigators and police officers in the surreal dystopian city of New York.

The two characters work for an agency called the Freelance Police, and spend their days investigating bizarre cases and battling various villains in their wacky adventures. Sam serves as the level-headed leader of the duo, while Max is the impulsive, unpredictable, and often insane partner, constantly pushing the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

The show is characterized by its absurdist humor, surreal imagery, and irreverent attitude towards authority and culture. It's a darkly comedic show, full of jarring imagery and situations, full of adult themes and quick, witty humor that is best enjoyed by mature audiences.

Each episode of the show typically follows a self-contained storyline that is resolved by the end of the episode, with occasional continuity and characters appearing throughout the entire season. For example, one episode features the duo on a date that quickly goes awry, involving a giant monster, a mad scientist, and a group of angry townspeople. Another episode revolves around a mystery surrounding a missing magic rabbit, with Sam and Max encountering a series of eccentric characters on the way to solving the case.

Sam and Max's characterizations are the highlight of the show. Sam is a rational, logical, and practical detective, despite his tendency for excessive violence, while Max is his wild, imaginative, and incredibly unpredictable partner. The two characters have a genuine bond, and their partnership is often the emotional center of the show.

The visual design of the show is another standout feature. The animation is both surreal and dark, with exaggerated character designs and bizarre creatures that often border on the grotesque. The show's background features an art deco style, full of neon-lit streets and surreal elements that reinforce the fantastical setting of the show.

The show's sense of humor is another major attraction. The humor is often very quick, witty and self-deprecating, often going back and forth between slapstick comedy and clever wordplay. In addition, the show has a number of running gags and recurring jokes such as Max's obsession with guns and Sam's frequent use of violence, adding depth and character to the show that grows with each episode.

There is a distinctive 90's feel to the show's soundtrack, down to the show's opening theme, which has an upbeat, catchy tone that sets the tone for the show's whimsical tone.

Despite its limited airing window, Sam & Max Freelance Police has gained a cult following over the years, with fans praising its humor, distinctive visual style, and the dynamic between Sam and Max. Whether you're a fan of slapstick comedy or surrealist imagery, it's a show that is sure to delight and entertain audiences of all ages.

Sam & Max Freelance Police is a series that ran for 1 seasons (13 episodes) between October 4, 1997 and on Shout Factory

Based on Steve Purcell's enormously popular underground comic, the adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police is an edgy and often irreverent, impudent, insolent, impious and silly series about a pair of likeable law enforcement types who don't take crap (oops! we mean guff) from anybody. It's about the timeless struggle between good, evil and snack time; the weekly mishaps of a six-foot dog--Sam--and a three-foot rabbity-thing (though he prefers the term lagomorph)--Max--who have a mirthful time trying to resolve only the weirdest criminal cases of the day. Really.
