Saikano is a 13-episode anime series that debuted on Family Gekijou in 2002. Directed by Mitsuko Kase and produced by Gonzo, the show is a combination of romance, drama, and science fiction. Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan, Saikano tells the story of Shuji and Chise, two high school students who are in love with each other. Shuji is a normal boy who is the captain of the school's kendo team. Chise, on the other hand, is a shy and introverted girl who is always reading books. However, Chise is not an ordinary girl. She is actually a cyborg weapon created by the Japanese military to fight an ongoing war.

At the start of the series, Shuji and Chise's relationship is still in its early stages. They are both hesitant to confess their love for each other, but their feelings are obvious to everyone around them. However, their peaceful lives are soon disrupted when the war finally reaches their city.

As the situation becomes more desperate, the Japanese military decides to use Chise as their ultimate weapon. They enhance her powers to the point where she can destroy entire cities with a single blast. However, this causes Chise's body to slowly deteriorate, and it becomes clear that she will not survive much longer.

Despite this, Shuji and Chise continue to hold on to their love for each other, even as the world around them falls apart. They try to find a way to escape the war and live a normal life together, but it seems impossible.

The series is filled with emotional moments as the two lovers struggle to come to terms with their fate. As Chise slowly loses her humanity and becomes more machine-like, Shuji realizes that he may soon lose the girl he loves forever.

Saikano's animation style is unique and memorable. The colors are muted, and the backgrounds often look like they were painted with watercolors. This gives the show a dream-like quality that matches its somber tone.

The show's soundtrack is also exceptional. It features haunting piano melodies and beautiful vocal tracks, all of which help to amplify the emotional impact of the story.

One of the most interesting aspects of Saikano is its treatment of war. It portrays the horrors of war in a very realistic way. There are scenes of destruction and death, and it is clear that no one is safe from the violence. The show does not take sides in the conflict, instead choosing to focus on the human impact of war.

Overall, Saikano is a compelling and emotional anime series that will tug at your heartstrings. It is not a show for those who prefer light-hearted, happy stories. However, if you are a fan of romance, drama, and science fiction, you will find a lot to love in this series.
