Safe Season 1 Episode 1, titled 'Episode 1' introduces us to the drama and mystery that the show has to offer. Tom Delaney, a pediatric surgeon, is a widowed father living in a beautiful gated community, surrounded by blue skies, white picket fences, and clean, well-manicured lawns. However, this idyllic image is shattered when his elder daughter, Jenny, vanishes overnight from a wild teenage party that goes wrong.
Tom and his younger daughter, Carrie, are left to deal with the aftermath of Jenny's disappearance. The community comes together to search for Jenny, but the search proves futile. The police are investigating the case, but Tom is frustrated with their lack of progress. Meanwhile, his personal life is also in upheaval, with secrets from his past threatening to come to light.
In a parallel storyline, we meet Sophie, a teenage girl who is dealing with her own issues in a relationship she's not quite comfortable with, uncertain of how to handle it. Despite her friends' advice to break things off with Josh, her older and controlling boyfriend, she continues to stay with him. Sophie is also present at the party where Jenny disappears, and she's the last person to see her. Sophie is wracked with guilt over not having done enough to help Jenny, and this guilt gnaws at her throughout the episode.
The episode also introduces several other characters who live in the community, all with their own secrets and agendas, and all of whom may have played a role in Jenny's disappearance. There's Tom's neighbor, Pete, who has a suspicious interest in Jenny's case, and Jenny's boyfriend, Chris, who is not entirely forthcoming with information. Detective Sergeant Jojo Marshall, who is heading the investigation, also has a personal connection to the Delaney family, which could add more complications to the case.
As the episode progresses, the tensions in the community continue to rise. Tom becomes increasingly desperate to find his daughter, and this desperation leads him to make some questionable decisions. Meanwhile, Sophie begins to unravel under the weight of her guilt and the pressure from her friends and family to come clean about what she knows. And as more secrets come to light, it becomes clear that no one in the community is quite what they seem.
Overall, Safe Season 1 Episode 1 is a gripping introduction to the show, with a well-crafted mystery that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The characters are all complex and multifaceted, with their own motivations and flaws, which makes them interesting to watch. The setting is also impressive, with the contrast between the pristine, picture-perfect community and the dark secrets that lurk beneath its surface. Safe is a show that promises to be full of surprises and twists, and this first episode sets the tone for what is to come.
