RWBY season 2 episode 2, titled "Welcome to Beacon," picks up where the first episode left off. The four main characters, Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, have arrived at Beacon Academy, a school for hunters and huntresses. As the title suggests, the episode focuses on the new students' introduction to the academy and the challenges they face upon arrival.
In the beginning, they are welcomed by the academy headmaster, the cheerful and eccentric Professor Ozpin, and his stern right-hand woman, Glynda Goodwitch. Both characters are recurring figures in the show, and they immediately establish some of the core themes of the series, such as working together, following one's dreams, and fighting against evil.
After a brief tour of the facilities, the students are separated into teams of four for their initiation test, which involves a race to the top of a cliff. The test puts the newcomers' abilities to the test and offers a glimpse of the other teams' strengths and weaknesses.
As the test progresses, the students encounter various obstacles, some of which pose a genuine threat to their safety. The stakes are high, and the team members must rely on each other to make it to the top. The action sequences are cleverly choreographed and visually stimulating, with each character showcasing their unique fighting style and skills.
However, the real drama unfolds later on when the students are tasked with creating a team name and performing their first joint mission. The exercise quickly becomes a lesson in teamwork and communication as each member struggles to find their role within the group. Personalities clash, and conflicts arise, as the students begin to realize that working as a team is not as easy as they thought.
The writers do an excellent job of introducing new characters and hinting at their motivations without overwhelming the audience. Despite the large ensemble cast, each character feels distinct and memorable, with their own backstory and personality. Some standouts include Jaune Arc, a goofy and insecure boy with a hidden past, and Pyrrha Nikos, a kind and skilled fighter who takes it upon herself to mentor Jaune.
Overall, "Welcome to Beacon" is a strong start to the second season of RWBY. It sets up the overarching plot of the show while also delivering on the action and character development fans have come to expect. The animation is sleek and polished, with vibrant colors and dynamic camera angles, and the music is upbeat and catchy. Fans of the show will definitely enjoy this episode, and newcomers may find it a good jumping-on point to the series.
