Ep 24. Midnight Battle

The episode titled "Midnight Battle" begins with a tense conversation between Kenshin and Sanosuke as they continue on their journey towards Kyoto. Kenshin explains that he is going to meet up with an old mentor, but will also try to gather information on the Shishio Makoto's plans. Sanosuke is still wary of Kenshin's involvement in the political situation and his relationship with the Ishin Shishi, but agrees to continue traveling together.

As they approach a small village, they are stopped by a group of men who claim to be protecting the area from bandits. However, it is soon revealed that the men are actually working for Kanryu Takeda, a wealthy businessman who seeks to control the village for his own means. Kanryu has hired several mercenaries to intimidate the villagers and take control of their land.

Kenshin and Sanosuke refuse to stand idly by as Kanryu's men terrorize the locals. They offer to help the villagers defend their homes, but the villagers are wary of outsiders and refuse their help. Kenshin and Sanosuke decide to stay in the village anyway, as they suspect that Kanryu and his men will not give up easily.

As night falls, Kanryu's men launch their attack on the village. Kenshin and Sanosuke are ready and waiting, and a fierce battle ensues. Kanryu's mercenaries are well-armed and well-trained, but Kenshin and Sanosuke are more skilled fighters. Despite their superior abilities, the fight is intense and the outcome is not certain.

The battle rages on for hours, with both sides struggling to gain the upper hand. Kenshin and Sanosuke fight valiantly, but they are outnumbered and outgunned. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, a group of villagers arrives to reinforce the defenders. They bring with them a cache of weapons that they had been secretly stockpiling for just such an occasion.

With the tide turned, Kenshin and Sanosuke are able to push back the attackers and force them to retreat. Kanryu himself is present during the battle, and Kenshin confronts him directly. He warns Kanryu that if he ever tries to harm innocent people again, he will have to face Kenshin's wrath.

As the sun begins to rise, Kenshin and Sanosuke prepare to continue on their journey. They bid farewell to the grateful villagers and set out for Kyoto, feeling satisfied that they were able to make a difference in the lives of those they helped defend.

The episode ends with a brief scene of Kanryu regrouping his forces and plotting revenge against Kenshin and Sanosuke. It is clear that the two warriors will have to be on their guard as they continue on their journey, as the enemies they face will only grow more formidable.
